2012 Honda CR-V — Overheating
The Customer's Concern: A customer contacted Rodgers Family Auto & Truck Repair requesting an estimate to replace the head gasket on their 2012 Honda CR-V. The vehicle had already been diagnosed by another repair shop as having a failed head gasket. Before recommending a major engine repair, we wanted to perform our own accurate and thorough diagnosis.
Our Diagnostic Process: We removed the spark plugs and inspected the cylinders for evidence of coolant entering the combustion chambers. We found none. We then performed a compression test on all four cylinders. Compression was within specifications on all four cylinders. Because a failed head gasket can allow combustion gases to enter the cooling system, we also tested the cooling system for evidence of combustion gases. We found none. However, we were able to verify that the vehicle was experiencing an overheating condition. The cooling system was low on coolant. We pressure-tested the cooling system to determine where the coolant was going. That's when we found the actual problem: The water pump was leaking. We replaced the leaking water pump to correct the coolant loss. Because the vehicle had experienced an overheating condition, we also replaced the thermostat. An overheating event can damage a thermostat, making replacement appropriate as part of addressing the cooling-system problem. After completing the repairs, we verified the vehicle's operation.
The Result: The vehicle was returned to the customer without performing the originally requested head-gasket replacement. More than a year later, the customer has reported no further overheating problems. Our diagnostic process prevented the customer from paying for an unnecessary major engine repair. The estimated savings to the customer were approximately $4,000.
What This Example Demonstrates: We didn't simply accept the previous diagnosis. We tested it. We followed the evidence. We found the actual cause. And we verified the repair. The problem wasn't a head gasket. It was a leaking water pump.
2015 Kia Rio — Engine Wouldn't Rev
The Customer's Concern: A customer contacted Rodgers Family Auto & Truck Repair requesting an estimate for an engine replacement for their 2015 Kia Rio. The vehicle would start and run, but when the accelerator was pressed, the engine would not rev properly. The vehicle had already had significant catalytic-converter work performed elsewhere. The rear catalytic converter had been replaced approximately one year earlier, and the front catalytic converter had been replaced just a few months before the vehicle came to us.
Our Initial Assessment: Once the vehicle was towed to our shop, the symptoms raised a concern about a possible restricted exhaust system. Based on our experience with how an engine behaves when exhaust flow is restricted, we suspected that one or more catalytic converters could be clogged. But suspicion isn't a diagnosis.
We Tested the Theory: We installed backpressure gauges before and after the catalytic converters and measured the exhaust backpressure. The testing showed that the rear catalytic converter was restricted. But we didn't stop there. We needed to understand why the rear converter had become clogged.
Following the Evidence: Further inspection revealed that the original front catalytic converter had begun coming apart internally. As the material inside the front converter deteriorated, pieces of the substrate made their way into the exhaust system and ultimately restricted the rear catalytic converter. This explained the vehicle's history. The original front catalytic converter had begun failing and eventually contributed to the failure of the rear catalytic converter. The rear converter was replaced approximately a year earlier, but the underlying problem with the front converter continued. As the vehicle continued to be driven, the deteriorating front catalytic converter eventually caused the replacement rear converter to become restricted as well.
The Repair: The customer elected to replace the front catalytic converter. That addressed the original source of the problem, but our testing showed that the rear catalytic converter was still restricted. Replacing only the front converter would not restore proper exhaust flow because the rear converter had already been damaged by the material from the failing front converter. We therefore replaced the rear catalytic converter as well.
Verification: After the repairs were completed, we rechecked the exhaust backpressure readings. The readings were within specification. We then test drove the vehicle. The Kia Rio ran properly and responded normally to the accelerator. Problem Solved. The customer originally contacted us looking for an engine replacement. Our testing showed that the engine itself wasn't the problem. The actual problem was a restricted exhaust system caused by a catalytic converter failure that led to another catalytic converter becoming clogged.
What This Example Demonstrates: Experience helped us recognize the possibility of an exhaust restriction. Testing confirmed that suspicion. Further inspection helped us understand why the restriction occurred. And verifying the backpressure readings after the repair confirmed that the problem had been resolved. We don't want to simply identify what's wrong. We want to understand why it went wrong.
