When the Check Engine Light comes on, your vehicle is telling you something important. But it isn't telling you which part to replace. The Check Engine Light is part of your vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic system (OBD). When the vehicle's computer detects a fault or operating condition that has the potential to cause the vehicle to produce harmful emissions above allowable standards, it can store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and illuminate the Check Engine Light. That Diagnostic Trouble Code gives us valuable information. But it is only the beginning of the diagnostic process. Reading a code is not the same as diagnosing a vehicle. What Does a Diagnostic Trouble Code Actually Tell Us?

When your vehicle detects a fault, it may store one or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes. A DTC helps us identify which system detected a problem and gives us a direction for further testing. What it doesn't necessarily tell us is which component has failed. A single trouble code can sometimes have several possible causes. The problem could involve a component itself, wiring, an electrical connection, another component affecting the system, or an operating condition that caused the computer to see something outside of its expected parameters.


That's why simply retrieving a code isn't enough. From there, we may need to perform component testing, wiring and circuit testing, analyze live vehicle data, inspect connections, take electrical measurements, or perform other system-specific tests to determine what's actually causing the fault. The DTC tells us which system detected a problem. Testing helps us determine what actually failed and why. That's the difference between reading a code and diagnosing a vehicle.

The Check Engine Light is primarily related to your vehicle's engine-management and emissions-monitoring systems. Modern vehicles continually monitor numerous systems and components that can affect how efficiently the engine operates and the emissions produced by the vehicle. If we haven't verified the problem, we're not ready to diagnose it.

Retrieve Diagnostic Information

Next, we communicate with the vehicle's computer systems and retrieve the available diagnostic information. That may include:

  • Live vehicle data

  • Module information


This information gives our technicians a starting point. But again: This is where diagnosis begins—not where it ends.

Develop a Diagnostic Direction

Once we've verified the concern and reviewed the diagnostic information, we determine what needs to be tested. Different codes require different diagnostic strategies. A technician needs to understand how the system is supposed to operate, what conditions caused the code to set, and which tests can confirm or eliminate possible causes. That's where training, experience, technical information, and critical thinking become extremely important.

A mechanical problem may cause a sensor reading to appear incorrect. One failed component may even cause another system to operate outside of its expected range. That's why replacing a part simply because its name appears in a trouble-code description can lead to unnecessary repairs. Our goal isn't to replace the component associated with the code. Our goal is to determine what caused the code.

Explain What We Found

Once we've reached a diagnosis, we'll explain our findings and our recommended repair. We want you to understand: What we found. What testing led us there. What we recommend. Why we recommend it. You shouldn't have to be an automotive technician to understand what's happening with your vehicle.

Perform the Repair

Once you've approved the repair, we'll perform the necessary work using appropriate repair procedures. But the process isn't finished yet. There's one more step that we consider extremely important.

Replacing a component doesn't automatically prove that the vehicle has been repaired correctly. That's why verification matters. Depending on the repair, we may need to:
